MesaMar - Seafood - Coral Gables

MesaMar ... a cozy spot to satisfy your fresh, seafood cravings in Coral Gables....

Fresh Seafood

Solo dining rating:

Valet parking is a reasonable $8. If you choose to self park, note that parking in Coral Gables is not always easy. Leave a little early to find an open spot along the side roads or in the Coral Gables Museum Garage on Aragon Avenue, or Garage 1 on Andalusia Ave.; both are a short walk to the restaurant.

Can you eat at the bar?
Bar Area - by MesaMar

There is a beautiful bright albeit small bar where diners may eat if they wish. They can enjoy drinks and appetizers while waiting for their table, or enjoy their entire meal.

What to wear:
Florida casual. I saw everything from jeans, to shorts, to suits. Dress nicely, but not too casual.

Peoplewatching/entertainment/atmosphere rating:

Organic/Vegetarian/Vegan Friendly
MesaMar a a hugely popular seafood spot in The Gables. As such, there is no shortage of selections for my vegetarian friends!

Interior "The Library" - by MesaMar
What should the solo diner look for?

I was very excited for my reservation at MesaMar. I had perused the menu on numerous occasions and knew exactly where I would park, what I would eat, and what I'd sip on. I walked in and was greeted by a warm hostess who promptly seated me .... in what appeared to be an older section of the restaurant. I was really hoping to sit in the bright and beautiful 'library' section. The softly lit and cozy library was so much more inviting than where I was seated. Ask to be seated in the library if possible ... the other section is not as warm and homey. The music was relaxing... think Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble.

I began my Asian inspired seafood fest with a seriously delicious sashimi appetizer MesaMar calls Coconut Rolls ($8) WOW!! So good! The caramelized cashews snuggly wrapped by tuna was a delicious crunchy twist to your everyday sashimi.

Coconut Rolls
Caesar Salad
After cleaning my plate, I ordered a light Caesar salad which was simple, but satisfying.

I sat for a while taking in the atmosphere. There were a few couples that I could see, and a table with doctors seated nearby discussing surgical techniques. There was also a large table with a family celebrating a birthday. It did include children, some of whom were running around the restaurant leading to a few annoyed glances from other diners. Although MesaMar is located along a well-know Coral Gables street, there was not much in the way of people watching.

Linguini al Vongole
New York Strip Steak
I had a hard time deciding what to order for my main course. All of the pasta entrees sounded delicious. The Linguini del Mar with shrimp, scallops, calamari, mussels and clams tossed in a vodka sauce

I ordered the Linguini al Vongole ($18) as as my main course. It was a mix of clams, white wine, and parsley in a homemade garlic sauce. The flavor was delicious; but it was very oily. I asked for a different entree and they graciously accommodated me. The New York ($25)Strip steak was cooked perfectly!

What may not be good about it for the solo diner?
A single diner would be more than welcome at MesaMar; the service is fantastic and food is delicious. Personally, I think I would bring a few friends or family to dine with me the next time I visit.

Would I return?
I sure will; there are many more items I'd like to try on the menu

Parillada de Mar looked amazing! Imagine a combination of lobster, shrimp, scallops, calamari, fish, mussels, and clams served with chimichurri on the side and figerling potatoes wedges. The Gorgonzola and Pear Ravioli sounds equally fabulous! It's Miami Spice time, so if you'd like to sample some of MesaMar's best offerings, now's the time to do it! Cheers! 🍸
