The past two weeks have been difficult for our nation. While grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, the tragic death of George Floyd sparked protests the likes of which we haven't seen in almost 30 years. As the mother of two young black women, this strikes very close to home. My heart swelled with pride, and my eyes filled with water as I watched them exercise their 1st Amendment right. On June 5th in Wynwood, Miami, a local news reporter spoke with both Paige and Kayla. 
As a former news reporter and anchor, I've covered dozens of protests, many of which have been violent (I can attest to the burn of teargas). I know all too well that after some time has passed, the placards are thrown away and the news cycle finds a new target. This does not seem likely in the aftermath of the unprecedented 2020 protests. Part of loving my girls is seeing and loving the color of their skin and accepting the reality that they will likely face some form of discrimination sometime in their life. With this in mind, I've endeavored to use my platform to help support black-owned restaurants.
